I find myself at times attracted to 'big name' players, and sometimes that's a trap when it comes to players whose reputation, or in another way whose injuries, belie their true potential for production. But in this case, these numbers just cannot hide.

Nick Johnson [2009, FLA Marlins] HR: 2, RBI: 18 AVG: .279

[2008, WAS Nationals] HR: 6, RBI: 44 AVG: .295

Jim Thome [2009, CWS & LAD] HR: 23, RBI: 77 AVG: ~.242

[2008, CWS] HR: 34, RBI: 90 AVG: .245

Now, here I'll return to the name game. I know I'd feel a lot more comfortable heading into the season with a name like Thome sitting in my DH spot, full aware that the spot would be occupied by a dying star. Here's the icing: Thome signed with the Twins for $1.5mil, Nick the Stick with the Yanks for $5.5mil. A question that will plague my entire season: could that four-million dollars have been used to find some middle ground with Johnny Damon?
